Support at Abbeyfield Winchester

Cleaning

Residents’ rooms are cleaned regularly by house staff, but those residents who are able to and wish to do so, may carry out these task themselves.

Laundry

Residents provide their own bed linen and towels, that are laundered, together with personal items by the house staff.

Personal care

We seek to provide safe, secure and flexible living for our residents. In our sheltered houses, we are not allowed to provide personal care (such as help with dressing or washing) or nursing care (other than for emergencies or for short-term illness). However, we can and do help residents to manage their health and personal care requirements.

24 hour emergency call system

There is a communicall system operating 24 hours a day for emergencies, and our House Manager lives on site.

Doctors

Residents are encouraged to register at the Twyford Surgery which is a 10-15 minute walk away. Escorts to hospital in an emergency or for appointments can sometimes be arranged if a resident’s own family cannot be present.

Extra help

If help is required with personal care, for example bathing or dressing, this can be arranged with a care service, who will charge at their current rates. Abbeyfield Winchester cannot accept any responsibility for this, and residents and their families need to make their own arrangements, staff will however, if required, make every effort to facilitate any care that is needed.

Nursing care is not provided at Orchard Close. Serious illnesses may therefore necessitate a move to a nursing home or hospital for respite care. After an appropriate assessment of support needs, it is normal for residents to return to Orchard Close However, if long-term care is required the resident would need to find more suitable accommodation.

“I am delighted to be here. From my window overlooking the garden and fields beyond it gives me great joy to witness the changing of the seasons from the blossom and fresh greens of spring to the glorious reds and yellows of autumn.” Gillian Arthur
